Juicy Update!

An update, at last. A day early, or two weeks and six days late...?

Well, it's been three weeks since my last actual update, so I think I owe everyone tolerating my disappearance (sorry, guys) something substantial. So this time around, I'll be showing you two new characters (one of which being the first non-human contestant mentioned so far). I'll also be talking about something other than characters this time around... enemies. This in turn will lead me to the last part of this update... which you'll have to read to find out about.

***

VEXAS THE HEX
ProfileVexas
Vexas was the mercenary Hallie hired to enter the Contest for the Render family. Originally, he didn't really plan on entering the Contest for himself, but when Hallie came to him, he didn't even hesitate to agree to it. Then she abandoned him; this bothered Vexas more on a personal level rather than a business perspective.
Afterward, he returned to Daguerro to inform Hallie's parents, but their orders disturbed him even more: they wanted him to capture her; by any means necessary!
Fortunately for Hallie, Vexas' feelings might prevent him from doing anything she might regret. In fact, it seems he still intends to finish the Contest for her. Unfortunately, while he may not want to hurt Hallie, he may be very willing to hurt her companions to achieve his own victory for her.

QUIN QUAREN
ProfileQuin
Quin is one of the Qu, a race of creatures well-known for their bizarre appearance, their inability to grasp correct grammar usage and most of all, eating. A lot. Unfortunately, this by extension causes so many people to look down on Qus as simply being weird and unintelligent creatures.
Quin, however, grew up recognizing this condescending. As a result, s/he went out of his/her way to learn more and more to become smarter, even so far as turning his/her back on the gourmand lifestyle of his/her people. Unfortunately, even after a lifetime of studying, it wouldn't be enough to bring respect to his/her people.
Then came the announcement of the Contest. S/he felt that if s/he won - if a Qu won - they would not be so looked-down upon... they would be creatures respected by the other races. And that would be all the reward s/he could ever ask for.

And while we're on the subject of the contestants, I'd like to add that not every one of them will be important. In fact, most of them will be nameless (well, as far as you're concerned). As with any RPG, while you wander the world, you'll be at constant risk of being assaulted by monsters. But in CoH:FF, you're also at risk of being attacked by rival contestants!

All Rival Contestants are identified by their job classes. For instance, here's a couple you'll be seeing early on:

RIVAL CONTESTANT - LV.1 Monk
Lv1 Monk
Monks typically utilize unarmed combat effectively. Low-level Monks however are fairly interchangeable with common street thugs, rather than disciplined martial artists. As a result, they have few moves available to them, and fail to land hits often. That said, if they DON'T miss, even a well-equipped warrior could be winded.

RIVAL CONTESTANT - LV.1 Black Mage
Lv1 Black Mage
Black Mages are known for using [obviously] black magic. This low-level incarnation tends dabble in low-level incarnations of the spells like "Fire", "Blizzard" or "Thunder". On a rare occasion, they might even resort to "Bio" (poison), but it doesn't happen often. Though weak, these guys may be one of your bigger concerns early on because of their ability to attack all party members at once.

Oh, and here's they'll look like in action:
MockScreenshot1

Wait? A screenshot!?
Okay, I admit it's totally Photoshopped. This is what I "want" the battle scenes to look like. It will take some work, and I may require a little bit of aid with it (as far as scripting, if necessary), but I intend for the battles to capture the feel of old-school Final Fantasy titles (complete with "chibi", little heroes on the right and tall, detailed enemies on the left). And believe me, I'll be working hard to make sure that I can attain this.

By the way, I don't remember if I mentioned this yet or not, but like you can see in this screenshot, all monsters and characters will be hand-drawn. Battle animations too, most likely. I'm still debating about the backgrounds...

RPG Maker VX is supposedly coming out this month (although there is no solid release date yet). I don't know how much it'll cost, but I have money set aside for it. So, it won't be long now before actual production of the game begins.

Look forward to it.

No update?

Due to unforseen circumstances, I was not able to gather things together quickly enough to post new information for today. For those of you already fearing the worst, I'll be holding off the next update until next Tuesday (rather than tomorrow) with a nice-sized chunk of new info to make up for the lack thereof today.

Look forward to it!

A Couple New Characters

My sincerest apologies for the late posting. Another small update this week; sorry. I'm going to tell you about the first contestants to actually compete against the protagonists. Fans of the Final Fantasy series may have heard their names before:

BIGGS & WEDGE
ProfileBiggs

ProfileWedge
At about the age of 7, Biggs was rescued by someone who (as his mind remembers it) somewhat resembled an Onion Knight. Since then, he's trained very hard in the ways of the Onion Knight, striving to be just like his hero. As such he would always be out to lend a helping hand to those who need it... and those who don't. Unfortunately, between Biggs' bravado and the infamous incompetence of the Onion Knight class, he tends to cause more problems than he solves.
Wedge is his partner, drafted against his will. Truthfully, Wedge does admire Biggs' spirit, but he'd much rather do it from a distance. You see, when Biggs' plans go awry (which they almost always do), Wedge is usually the one who takes the blame. Furthermore, it'd be foolish to call him a fighter as his tall, lanky body tends to leave him very clumsy and awkward.

Of course, with the mention of the contest, Biggs believed it was his "duty" to involve himself... and by extension, Wedge's duty to be his eternal sidekick. And although, he claims he's competing for the sake of justice, surely Biggs wouldn't turn down any riches... or maybe a statue of him. But they're such fools, it'd be hard to believe they could EVER win the contest. Right?

New Character + Create-a-character

Didn't think I'd stick to it, did you? An update every Tuesday might actually be hard to keep up with, but if that's what's going to keep me working on this project than so be it. Believe it or not, I have the next 30 or so updates already planned, so you've got really nothing to worry about.

So let's get it started, huh?

***

JOCELYN C. SNOW
ProfileJocelyn
Despite being human, Jocelyn works part-time for MogNet as a reporter. Though somewhat skilled in a fight, she's decided not to actively participate in the Contest. However, she feels the events of the Contest itself is worth writing about. It could, in fact, be the story that earns Jocelyn her big break. As a result, she along with her moogle partner, Kikipo. apply to be in the Contest with no actual desire to contribute. Instead, they go to wherever the Contestants go, trying to interview everyone involved.
In the game, Jocelyn and Kikipo will be practically everywhere. While Kikipo acts as the game's save point, Jocelyn will discuss whatever is going with the story to you, (in case you stop playing for a while, she can give you a refresher) and will offer information about any of the other contestants you've met (just in case you forget who's who; there are a lot of characters after all).

Yes, this character is actually based off me. I usually give myself a brief cameo appearance in the games I make, but this may be my hugest role yet... even if I don't directly contribute to the storyline.

But you too can make a character for the game. If you know me through RRR or DeviantArt, send me a PM or a note requesting to be a character and I'll give you my patented profile for you to fill out. There are few restrictions, as you can be almost whatever job class you wish as long as it was in an FF somewhere (much like my "Journalist" class, inspired by FF8's Laguna Loire even though there was never a specifically named class for this). You can even be a good guy or a bad guy if you want.

Everyone who contributes will be credited, of course. So what've you got to lose? Except maybe half an hour?

***

Small update, I know. Once I actually get RMVX, I'll be able to post screenshots, so until then the updates may seem a little dinky. I do hope you'll forgive me until then.

Until next week!

Official Announcement

And here you are; the first official announcement for "Contest of Heroes: The Final Fantasy" including backstory as well as info on the four main characters.

STORY
Welcome to the world of Gaia. In this world, the elements that allow life (fire, water, wind and earth) have always been kept in constant balance thanks to the existence of the Four Crystals. Nobody knows where they came from or how they do what they do, but as far back as history's been recorded, they've been there. And it's been proven that even simply moving one of these Crystals can have an extravagantly adverse effect on the entire world. Thus, as a safety precaution, ancient civilizations had built temples around them. Knowing that messing with even one of these Crystals could potentially cause the destruction of the world, Gaia's people were smart enough to leave them alone. Well, most of them…

You see, temples would not be enough to protect them, as there would always be some force actually believing they could control the power of the Crystals for their own gain. In fact, after one such event in history, a group of four anonymous heroes prevented worldwide catastrophe at the hands of a mad man. Though their names were forgotten, they would be forever remembered as the “Light Warriors”. In their honor, an organization of the same name was formed, to protect the Crystals, and by extension, the world, at all cost.

The Crystals themselves could be found shining in the four corners of the world. More precisely:
The Wind Crystal in the north near Tycoon Castle.
The Fire Crystal in the east at Crescent Lake.
The Earth Crystal in the south within the City of Eureka.
The Water Crystal in the west at within the City of Mysidia.
And at the center lies a large and powerful nation known as Cornelia Kingdom.

Princess Sara of the Kingdom of Cornelia had been having disturbing dreams for about a month or so. The dream was always the same. In it, the Crystals weakened and eventually broke apart. She watched as light faded from the now freezing world, the wind became stagnant, the sea became wild and the very planet itself began to rot. And every morning that followed, she told her father, King Grier, to inform the kingdom that it was no mere dream. She believed it to be a premonition; one that absolutely had to be stopped at all costs. But every morning, the king would laugh it off. "Tis but a silly dream, my dear. It's best not to worry our people over something as ridiculous as this."

But one day, an exhausted knight arrived on an equally exhausted chocobo. He fell before the king and said, "Your highness. I am Zeke Lancet, retainer to the King of Tycoon Castle, and the Light Warrior representative of the Wind Crystal. I know that our countries currently have ill relations with each other, but I come before you... desperate. I beg you to hear me out."

King Grier was nothing short of flabbergasted to see a man of Zeke's rank and reputation appear bursting into his castle only to grovel and beg. Grier was a fair and just king to his people, but he had little tolerance for foreigners. And he would have banished Zeke had Princess Sara not heard him utter the word "Crystal".

"Has something happened to the Wind Crystal, Sir Zeke?" she exclaimed quickly before her father could speak.

"It's difficult to explain, since I was away when it happened, highness, but I will try my best." he answered still facing the floor. “Four days ago, the other Light Warriors and I held a meeting in a top secret area. When I returned, the Temple of the Wind Crystal, Tycoon Castle and even the neighboring cities..." he paused for a moment and swallowed hard. Zeke looked up at last to reveal a warrior desperate enough to show his tears. "...they were completely devoid of life. There were no people. There were no animals."

"Monsters?" the King interrupted.

"No. Not even monsters remained. All signs of life had disappeared. Gone, without a trace. I rode everywhere I could in search of someone... anyone. The only lead I have is the Wind Crystal. It was letting off a strange light. Even after all my years guarding that Crystal I can honestly say I haven’t the slightest idea what that could mean.” Both the king and princess suddenly turned pale. "Finally, I rode south whereupon I'd found your kingdom... the first human contact I've seen in days."

Princess Sara shifted her eyes toward the king. "Still think my nightmares are silly, father?"

Grier did not want what happened to Tycoon to happen to Cornelia. And he was willing to do anything to prevent it, even so far as requesting the aid of foreigners. So, later that day, King Grier announced the situation to his people. At Sara's request, the King began a contest – The Contest of Heroes – if anyone could solve the mystery behind the Wind Crystal, he would be willing to offer anything they desired. In the days that followed, the news had spread all over Gaia. And before a full week had passed, several thousand adventurers from all over the world had suddenly arrived in Cornelia Kingdom… surely one of them could solve the mystery of the Wind Crystal and prevent Sara’s dreams from becoming reality.

CHARACTERS

NOAH RIVERA
ProfileNoah
Noah bears an important destiny in life. He is to marry Melanie Gallumont and take over her father's shop. Unfortunately for him, this is not the life he expected to lead. Noah always wanted so much more; he wanted to see the world. And when he proposed to his high school sweetheart three months ago, he hoped she'd join him. Melanie would much rather lead a simple, uneventful life though... a safe life.

When the Contest of Heroes was announced, Noah decided to apply for it. He believed winning or losing the contest would be irrelevant. He just wanted to see the world outside his birthplace before he tied the knot. And so he left, not saying goodbye to Melanie for fear that she would prevent him from going.

If only he’d listened to her. Truly, Noah had no idea what he was getting himself into… that this quest would much more complicated than simply “seeing the world”.

HALLIE RENDER
ProfileHallie
Hallie comes from a long line of wizards and heroes. Her ancestors were responsible for the ending of wars and preventing some of Gaia's greatest catastrophes; at least one of which having been a former Light Warrior. Somewhere along the line though, the Render family stopped being heroic. The past few generations have instead opted to live in the lap of luxury thanks to fame their ancestors won for them.

However, Hallie is not so vain in this regard. Upon hearing of the Contest of Heroes, she decided this would be her chance to return honor to her bloodline. She hired a mercenary and claimed that she would enter him in the contest as a representative of the Render family (which her parents totally bought). But upon arriving in Cornelia, she ditched him at first chance she got. She applied for the contest in his stead believing that only a Render could ever attain victory in this contest.

Unfortunately for Hallie, her family didn’t like what they heard when their mercenary got back to them. And she’d like even less the revelations she’d soon discover about her family’s history.

CASSIDY
ProfileCassidy
Cassidy grew up in an orphanage in Cornelia Kingdom. Though she'd never met her parents before, she's heard a lot about them. They were adventurers, traveling in search of relics of the past. It bothered her greatly that she was left behind, but she still wanted to leave one day to find them and join them. But last she heard (just days before the contest began), they were in Tycoon. She had to go there. She had to make sure they were okay.

Unfortunately for Cassidy, it didn’t matter that she seemed to be almost unnaturally capable for someone her age; she was still perceived as simply a child and was not allowed to enter the Contest (that being the only way to get into Tycoon at the moment).

And even if she were to reach Tycoon and find them, what exactly would she do? And what would they do? Would they be happy to see her? After all this time, would they even recognize her… or want her?

MARRON GRAVES
ProfileGrave
Graves used to be one of the richest people in Gaia. And he earned it too. But four years ago, his wife Annette simply left him for another man. The strange part was that when Graves confronted her about it, she claimed to have never met him before. Graves was crushed. His stopped working and watched his business fall apart. In the end, he lost everything.

But when he had nothing left, he finally saw clearly, or maybe it was madness: His wife couldn’t have really forgotten about him. He convinced himself that the other man was some kind of hypnotist, and was using Annette for some cause. Graves proceeded to spend the next year trying to undo whatever that man had done to her. But he failed, and the man simply made Graves look like a criminal.

Then he heard of the Contest of Heroes. If he could win, he could ask for a hefty sum of money, with which to afford all of the resources he would require to exact an unforgiveable vengeance to the man that ruined his life for seemingly no reason at all. It was Graves’ last chance; it had to work...

******

As I've said before, my plan is that this will be for RPG Maker VX, so as a result, I have no screenshots. But this isn't to say I haven't started yet; in fact, I have about twenty or so pages of the script already written (as well as much planned for later) and I've been working on lots of character designs.

And from now on, I'm going to take a page out of the "Smash Bros. Dojo" handbook by adding some information about the massive cast, the locations, the graphics (when I can do something about that) and the gameplay once a da-... er, once a week. So I guess, you should expect the first new info next Tuesday.

Look forward to it

Early Stages: FAQ

What is "Contest of Heroes: The Final Fantasy"
It is a game I'll be developing with RPG Maker VX (whenever it's released).

Final Fantasy? Isn't that a commercial franchise?
Yes, it is. It's really a popular practice among the RM community: ripping off real commercial franchises and butchering them with bad spelling and no relevance to the series in question whatsoever. They call it a fan-game.

So you're making a fan-game?
Due to the unfortunate reputation of most fan-games, I prefer to call it a "tribute" game. As a long-time fan of the series, I want to use my vast knowledge of the games (which is otherwise just wasting space in my brain) and join them together to create an overarching world. This will be achieved through countless references to actual games (for instance, all locations are named after places visited in the various games) while still having a completely original story. I believe this is a huge step up from just using the franchise name to draw attention; which is why Final Fantasy is the subtitle, rather than the title.

Isn't that kind of... uncreative?
I'm really only using FF as a template. There will be references through familiar terminology, and the stories/characters of actual games in the series may be mentioned as part of the world's "history". That said, the story and characters of THIS game are totally 100% original. That means: no Cloud.

So why even make a fan-game? What does this really have to do with FF?
Crystals and Job Classes, mostly. Expect to also see various familiar races, monsters, mascots, summons, airships, items and magic. Again, FF is my template. I want to use it because I want to use it. That's all there is to it.

Okay, what's the game about? Apparently some kind of contest.
Yes, a contest... of heroes. Truthfully, I don't want to go to into the story too much until later. The maker I'm using to make this game doesn't even exist yet currently, so besides planning and scripting, I don't have any progress (like screenshots or demos) I can actually show for this game. I'll be keeping pretty tight-lipped about the story and cast until probably around sometime around the new year. By then I'll have plenty of information to give and character designs to reveal.

Character designs? Are you making your own?
I guess I can divulge this much for now. All characters will be drawn by me. I'll be doing a series of facesets for each character and even drawing up static cutscenes for important scenes. Furthermore, all monsters (and possibly battle animations) will be drawn by me (not simply ripped from an FF6 ROM).

So you're drawing AND writing this game?
I'm an artist AND a writer. That's how I do things. If you're interested in seeing some of what I'm capable of (in terms of artistry and writing), check out http://littlelynn84.deviantart.com/.

Do you need help with anything?
Normally, when I make games, I work alone. But CoH:FF is admittedly the most ambitious project I've ever taken on. As a result, I probably will require some aid. But since I'm neither ready to give a plot synopsis, nor is RMVX actually out yet, I'll withhold all requests for help until I actually know what I need.

Anything else you want to say?
Please keep coming back to the CoH:FF's development blog. It might be basically dead here for a couple weeks, but when I release the first info, you can expect weekly updates featuring in-depth character bios, gameplay elements, job positions and more.

First update will probably be sometime during the last week of December. Maybe if you're lucky, I'll post on Christmas as my gift to everyone.

Until then, thanks for reading, and I hope you'll be back soon.
